RHS Newsletter Commentary on Visit by Former Driscoll House Resident, Summer 1988
On July 28, 1988, RHS was honored by a visit from a former resident of Driscoll House, Mrs. Alden J. Ritter, of Elyria, Ohio. Mrs. Ritter was accompanied by her husband, two daughters and their husbands, and six grandchildren, all of whom showed great interest in touring the house.
As Helen Fenn, Mrs. Ritter was married in the house in 1943. Her father, J. Grant Fenn, purchased the house in 1939 from Herbert Graver, the original owner. Then, the address of the house was on Longwood Drive. Later, Mr. Fenn bought the strip of land that extends to Seeley Avenue for the driveway that approaches the house from that street. Mr. Fenn died in 1945. His wife, Grace Fenn, continued to live in the house for another year before she sold it. She maintained an interest in the house however, and kept clippings of its acquisition by RHS, even after moving from the community to Clearwater, Florida. Mrs. Fenn died last July and it was because of her funeral here that her family were all in Chicago. It was a pleasure for the docent that Thursday afternoon to welcome them and to show them our exhibits.
